Our New Website

May 26, 2008 · Print This Article

It’s been almost 1 year in the making, and now that it’s posted on the net we couldn’t be more pleased. Last year, when I first brought up the idea of a new website I could see Jay turn red right before my eyes. Our old site was designed over the course of 5 years by 4 different programmers and in a word was “clunky”. After a little convincing, Jay was on board. Countless hours and thousands of dollars later, our new site is born.

Designed in Web 2.0, our new site is much more flexible and scalable. We receive so many emails full of great questions and comments that we wanted to incorportate into our site. Now, we can do that; and we can do it easily!

Thank you for your support over the years. And keep checking back. We’ll be adding to our site on a regular basis.

Great update to the site. I’ve been checking in for almost a year now and I think this is a good addition to the site. I like the additional pictures of these houses and of the inside. I hope to build one someday.
Keep up the good work guys!

I also just noticed the links to the pictures on flickr. Great to see all the additional photos not posted on this website.

    Everything is looking pretty good.

Hi! I love these cute little houses. I just wish they cost less. This seems like a lot of money, you know? Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying you should undervalue your homes, but maybe if they were more affordable you would sell more and get more people on the bandwagon. I know for a fact that I don’t need my 2500 sq.ft house. I wish there was an alternative to the price without sacrificing the obvious quality you put into them.

    That’s my 2 cents. Thanks!

Our homes are priced very competatively with Airstream Trailers. And our homes are designed to handle very cold winters. But what’s great about Tubmleweed Homes is that you cut the price in half by building it yourself. We use standard materials that can be purchased at Home Depot or Lowe’s. You can save even more money by using recycled materials. Dee Williams built her Tumbleweed home for just $10,000.

If i order house plans, does this include intructions on how to attach the house to the trailer?

Instructions are included on how to attach the house to a trailer. It is the most complicated part for most people, and we also offer workshops around the country on how to build a tiny house. Jay, the designer, spends a good deal of time explaining how to attach the house to the trailer at the workshop. If you buy the plans, the workshop is free. If you can’t attend the workshop, Jay will be available to consult you by phone or in person. When you purchase plans, he sets aside 3 hours to spend with you on the different questions you might have.

You said if you buy the plans, the workshop is free. Does the free workshop include both the building and design portions (2 days) or just the building portion?

    Thanks!

As of January 2010, the workshop is no longer included with the purchase of plans. However, we have lowered the price of plans to accommodate for this.

We are excited and have signed up for the workshop in Asheville, NC in September. Where in Asheville will the workshop be as we are traveling from the coast and want to stay in close proximity. We also would like to purchase plans for the Fencl but they are not available online.

I would love to design and build my own tiny house and I am going to buy your books

I live in the UK and was wondering what the postage would be.

Have there been any tumbleweed houses built in the UK

I have been living in a converted van (97.5sq ft) for six years so I will be up-sizing into a tiny house

    thanks

Shipping is free when you buy both books. We ship anywhere in the world. I don’t know of any Tumbleweed Homes that have been built in the UK.

Love the new site! I fell in love with your houses years ago and hope to own one soon. I am glad to know that the Sebastarosa is still available to purchase, although it’s not appearing on the site. It’s my favorite of the big houses you provide.
In answer to the people who talk about the price, I agree at first glance it seems a lot of money, but your getting WAY more for your dollar than an Airsteam could provide. Secondly, I spoke to a few of our local scroungers/ junkers (who, needless to say, are big believers in recycled materials) about the cost of building a Tumbleweed and they theorize that if you took a little time to gather everything you need, it is entirely possible to build something like the Lusby for under $5000 and something like the Enesti for around $45,000 (not counting land). And that’s in Southern California!
Anyhow, thanks Tumbleweed and keep up the good work!

i’m interested in building a tiny home and will be purchasing your books to design but one question keeps nagging me “What manufacturer are you using for the flatbed trailers for under the houses”?

You can use any manufacturer for the trailers. Here’s an excellent example: http://www.carry-ontrailer.com/product/7×16APF_OT.htm

Do you have an opinion on the feasibility of doing these with solar power?

Yes, solor power is feasible. In fact it’s been done by a few Tumbleweed home owners.

Great work on the new site!

We just got around to writing a feature on the Tumbleweed Tiny House Company for Small House Style. Check it out. Just a little homage the man that put small houses on the radar screen. Thanks Jay!
