Buying windows
Well, it’s not easy. There are a bazillion companies each touting their own product. I ended up using Golden Windows because I’m familiar with the product. I’ve got a room full of those windows at home and they’re lovely. I choose to go with casements, and because I’m cheap, I went with the vinyl clad inside and out. I know the wood interior trim would look spectacular, but I can’t justify the cost and since I’m thinking of painting the interior rather than leaving it knotty pine, I’m pretty sure the white trim will look okay. http://www.goldenwindows.com/ Harold, the salesguy, was wonderful. He was easy to talk to and he guided me through the process. Some of the fencl windows are a bit smaller than standard windows, so going custom is necessary. For the front bay window, companies don’t seem to carry the 15 “ windows, (even custom). I opted to go with a double casement instead. This is the side that will face the lake and that’s where th
e prevailing winds come from so it’s really important that these windows open. It might not look quite as cute as the windows in Jay’s fencl, but I’m confident they’ll look good.
I was happy to buy local, and unlike the big box stores, they’ll deliver in 10 days. Bonus.

This is a very timely post as my husband and I just installed the windows into our Tarleton in North Carolina. It went very well and we were pleased with the installation process. You can read about it here: http://120squarefeet.blogspot.com/2010/04/installing-windows-10.html
Thanks for posting about the special order of the windows. We did special order as well, of course. The main floor windows are sashes rather than awning because we didn’t want our cat to be able to push out the screen (we can open these from the top). The loft windows are awning style and crank out.

I love the fact that someone in Ontario is building a Tumbleweed. I can’t wait to hear about how that goes. I want to build a very much modified one but as yet haven’t gotten far enough to actually do it. My building skills are next to nil, so need to find help to do so. Was your trailer custom built? or just a standard 20ft trailer? I want to have a longer one as I have 5 dogs that will need to fit in it as well. Can’t wait for updates on the build. ANd would like to know how you are dealing with the waste water, where are you parking it? in a park or on a personal lot?

It was a standard 18 foot trailer.
A custom built one without sides might be better. There was work involved cutting down the sides.
I intend to use the humanmanure system. Essentially a bucket and sawdust. Then it gets composted. Gray water will go into a holding tank or it can be filtered through a gravel bed and go into the ground.
I’m parking it on my parent’s property. So I can hook up to water easily. Officially this is being used as a writer’s office.
Check out Jonathan’s build – he goes into detail about everything. Composting toilet, windows, walls, etc.
