32 million copies!

April 30, 2010 · Print This Article

This Sunday Jay Shafer is on the cover of Parade Magazine.

This could be the biggest exposure for Tumbleweed … ever! I’m frantically trying to optimize our website. Is it too late to upgrade our server? Probably. I wish I found out sooner.

It’s about time the media picked up your story Jay! CONGRATS!!!!!
I tell everyone about your wonderful Tumbleweeds. They all say, “I’ve never heard of anything like that!”, and then I tell them to go check out the site.

I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy of Sunday’s Parade. Yippeeee Jay!

LONG LIVE THE TINY REVOLUTION! :D

There’s lots you can do … simplify your theme by removing graphics, and shutdown as many features on your site as possible. You just might make it!

Congrats, Jay. It couldn’t happen to a more deserving guy. I hope there are far reaching effects for years — decades — to come.

I wish they’d included a reference to your website. There’s no mention of Tumbleweed houses at all. But I suppose enterprising people can google your name and find the website.

yeah, i was bummed they didn’t have more about your tiny houses or even your website…but it was still great to see you and your house on the front cover…they sure picked that one right – LOL!! some of my friends asked me about it bc there was no info for them to find out more, but i steered them in the right direction :-)

Congratulations, Jay! This is publicity that is definitely overdue! I only wish I had picked up a copy of the paper. BTW, on April 24 I attended a local Earth Day Fest and I took my copy of your “Small House Book” along to show to the solar panel, wind turbine, and other green technology dealers, so I could get their input on how many solar panels I’d need, etc. Everyone I showed the book to was excited about the houses; some people jotted down the URL to the website. I wanted to get the word out about Tumbleweed houses! Maybe we can now get those stupid bulding codes changed to accommodate smaller houses!

kathy, what kind of responses did you get from the dealers (as far as your best sources)? did you decided on anything they had to offer there? i am trying to decide my source of power but there is SOOOO much info out there that my head is spinning!

    Hi Betsy -

I’m still going through all the tons of information I picked up at the festival. I’ll go through and give you a list of the companies I saw there, if you like.

The dealers all agreed that, for a house the size of the New Vessica, I’d only need two solar panels. They had panels on display and the ones they indicated to me looked like they might be something like 3 feet by 4 feet or so. They said I could live off the grid very cheaply.

For Michigan (which is where I live), the dealers said solar would be a better choice than wind power, as we don’t get enough wind to justify the cost of a wind generator. One of the wind generator dealers explained that there’s a chart that shows the average wind speed for areas around the U.S. I need to pull out his information, because I think he gave a brochure with that information. Anyway, the average wind for the area you plan to live has to be a certain general speed for it to be feasible.

I know what you mean though – there is so much information to absorb! I’ve been trying to find a book on alternative energy that explains everything in down-to-earth language. I’ve tried reading magazines like “Solar Today” but they wander off into the techno-talk and I get lost. LOL

Like I said, I’ll look through all the stuff and let you know what I find. I’d have gone through it before this, but I was busy finishing classes and getting ready for graduation and I just haven’t had the time until now.

    Kathy

    kathy,

i know how the tech details can be…its not easy for the layman!!

i am really planning on solar too…not wind. i’d be interested on what the best heating solution was too. i have heard reports about really cold floors in northern winters. like you, i am in a ‘cold winter area’ – upstate new york near the vermont border.

would love to hear more when you get time.

    HAPPY GRADUATION!!!

Hey Jay, great news! I was in the library today and the librarian said, “We were just talking about your house! Did you know it’s on the cover of Parade? It’s so cute!” She took me to the news section and got out the SF Chronicle for me – AND THERE YOU ARE! Woohoo!

Any thoughts to include housing for seniors with user-friendly components?

    Thanks,
