Where should host an open house in your city?
Please let us know where you think we should stop on our tour and have an open house. We’re not familiar with many of the towns we’re visiting, and we’re looking for feedback on where to host the open house when we are in your neck of the woods.
Examples:
Please let us know if you can grant permission to be there (you work there or own the property). Ideally any suggested location will have ample parking.

It would be great if you could stop in Burlington, Washington on your way south. I would be very interested in seeing your tiny house close up. There is the Cascade Mall in Burlington, just adjacent to interstate 5.
Thanks for your consideration.

HI Steve,
We own a campgorund and I think your units would make great getaway cabins. There are other camps w/in 50 miles of my location. As a camp owner, we are always looking for ways to improve the camp and our bottom line. I truely feel your units would be of interest to other camp owners also. The plus of your units is they can be built on a trailer and then moved anywhere with in the camp, They are great homes and I’m considering making a small community of them.
Our local area is growing and I feel others would have an interest in your units also.
We’d love to have you come and strut your stuff! If you would like to do a presentation at our camp, I will be sure to get the local papers to come and see as well as solicit local camps to come and see what you have to offer.
Keep up the good work, you are right on track with these smaller homes!!
Sincerely,
Nancy Mayer — Highland Campground

I think you should stop at the World Forestry Center in Portland, OR for your Portland Open house. We have a large campus with a central plaza that would be great for this. I’m the Marketing Director there and can work with you on logistics etc.
We are located in Portland’s beautiful Washington Park and share a parking lot with the Zoo and Children’s Museum so there is TONS of people traffic up here in the summer.
Hope to hear from you!
Thanks.

Hello.
I live in Central NJ. I would love to see your Tumbleweed home in person.
My family of three has been living in a spacious double-wide mobile home for the past 3-4 years and are considering all of our future options. I have many questions regarding making a Tumbleweed our permanent year-round residence but don’t know exactly how to go about getting them answered. My main questions are with regard to the practicality of 3 people living in a Tumbleweed year-round.
I’d appreciate some information regarding how I can get my questions answered. My questions range from the normal “comforts of home” (ie: can the home accomodate a microwave?) to “can I park it in my parents’ backyard… legally and otherwise? …..
I previewed the Tumbleweed homes and found the one with two “bedrooms” the most appealing. (I believe it is 117 sq.ft…. with one bedroom downstairs and one upstairs in the loft). This is the home I’ve been checking out.
Thanks so much for your time.
Ben.

Hey Jay, I live in Salinas which is south of Santa Cruz some ways, but I frequent Santa Cruz. If you are trying to get the maximum bang for your buck, I would pursue having your open house at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. This is an amusement park right on the beach and there is ample parking and tons of people! Many of whom are from outside the area. I would think that if you were to do it at Walmart you would be getting mostly locals. Unfortunatley Ido not have any contact info. for the boardwalk, but if Google it you should have no problems getting info. Good luck! I will watch for the location and see you there!

Would love to have a closer look at your model. Why not any East Coast locations, like Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley… where we have master Amish/Mennonite craftsmen. My area is central from Maine to Florida & right along the I-81 corridor - we are dead middle on the East Coast. The local Walmart would be a great choice & I am certain that as far as a East exposure - this would garner some great press too! Thanks for listening. We have lots of hunters here & all would love to have one of these crafty little houses for a camp model! I would be willing to house you here on private property during your stay locally - providing all utility hook ups as well. The East Coast people would welcome the opportunity to view/inspect your model. Thanks & continue to expose us - instead of just the West Coast areas only.

Hi,
I’ve been on your site for a while now, watching you expand your catalog. Very nice work. Is there any way to make the home “habitable” in hot weather like in South Florida? My brother was really interested in building one there, but it just gets sooo hot and muggy that you can’t really live day-in, day-out without an air conditioner and proper insulation.
I see that you will be taking the ferry to Victoria on the 14th of July. Are you showing your home while you’re here? Victoria is a community that could well be interested in your Tumbleweeds since 1) housing costs (and density) are crazy and we could use alternatives; 2) the community as a whole is very interested in sustainability and green initiatives. There is actually a development off Esquimalt Road (blue bridge road) called Dockside Green about a mile or so from downtown. It’s the biggest Platinum standard Eco project in the world.
It’s also quite a beautiful city and you would really enjoy yourself, no doubt. The downtown area has to be the most “Akuna Matata” downtown I’ve ever been to. LOL And if you have a sweet tooth, ask for a “Nanaimo Bar” anywhere. You won’t regret it. ;).
Good luck in your travels and hope to see you in Victoria.

I live in Santa Cruz, and am familiar with the area. In the middle of town (more or less) there is the public park next to the river, San Lorenzo park. I’m not sure what your whole set up is, but if you were to park on the side street next to the park, you’d be able to hold classes or question and answer sessions etc in the park itself– just next to the street where the house could be set up. There is plenty of parking and the street is mellow. Though if your looking to draw a crowd of onlookers– this is probably not the place. As a second idea, they often block off sections of down town in front of the convention center for festivals/exhibits etc. This is would need arranging with the county however.
Cheers.
Looking forward to it.

I hope there will be trees left in Big Sur to enjoy after this summer’s fire…those redwoods are so very messy with the litter they naturally drop… wildland homeowners need to be diligent in their clean-up and clearance, but in this super-dry year, if a fire gets started, it’s not a happy story.
But back to the small houses–even though I am 6 ft tall, I would love to live in one of those…and yes, they would be perfect for the enchanted glades of the CA Coast. Who needs a 5000 sq ft

Are you ever out East? There’s a perfect location in Shelton, Connecticut with a very vast, flat grassed open parkland next to a river that’s used for sports, kite-flying, carnivals, etc. There’s a meeting house across from it. The meeting house is used for farmers’ and crafts markets in the summer, as well as entertainment events. The locale is called Shelton Riverwalk, and you may contact the Shelton Parks and Recreation Department at (203) 925-8422 to inquire about its use.
Shelton is the largest city in square miles in the state of Connecticut, so plenty of space for these babies to sprout up all over. It’s also a perfect location for the Northeast: a little over an hour from Manhattan, and driveable from all points in New England. Plenty of people in these parts interested in mostly ‘off-the-grid’ lives (Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont are attractions for homesteaders).
I first read about you in Natural Home and became determined to own one someday. I LOVE their quality appearance and craftmanship.
Love that Z-Glass for Costa Rica maybe. But 2 feng-shui considerations trouble me: that door opening against the foot of the bed and the back-to-the-door seating/desk spot, same room.
How ‘long distance’ can one reasonably move one? Across country? Out of country? What’s effect on gas mileage? Any information about restriction from highways?

We don’t lurk, we are everywhere! In September-October of every year, the “State Fair of Texas” is held…that sounds silly I know - but it’s huge. 3 weeks and hundreds of thousands of people. I realize it’s not tour time and we’re not neighbors, but it’s a very open venue there (lotsa concrete and many open aired coliseum type buildings) and there is intense exposure. (http://www.bigtex.com/) So, just that - and if not no worries - you have these 3 in this house and I am soooo spreading the word!

Hi Steve:
I live in Santa Cruz CA…Pacific Avenue is where all the action is, and there is plenty of parking in public lots and garages for folks that need to drive. Have you considered doing a “stealth” open house on a downtown street? As you will only be here for two hours, it seems that by the time anyone has concluded that having your open house on Pacific Avenue is somehow illegal, you will already be on your way out of town.
Another idea is a City parking lot. There are several downtown. The City is fairly progressive, and may allow you to park for two hours and have people tour the home. Or you could try the “stealth” approach, just park and open up for tours. Check out the City website for appropriate phone numbers, probably the parking department or public works.
Looking forward to seeing you in SC - Todd

-one of the parks along lake union (bonus of having bus transportation near by). They generally have parking (paid and otherwise). For example: http://www.seattleparksfoundation.org/project_LakeUnion.html
They generally have some facilities, like restrooms.
-Greenwood or Phinney near the Zoo (lots of offstreet parking).
Otherwise, your best bet would be to try and find someone’s driveway to park in at least for the night (illegal to live in a vehicle on the streets…). I would offer, but don’t think my apartment has the clearance necessary to fit a house on a trailer

I’m really looking forward to the open houses on the tour! But I was wondering, are you going to be selling the books and portfolio at the open houses? It be a great take home purchase for the day for old and new fans alike. Oh, and do you have a location for SLO or LA yet? Thanks.

I see you don’t have a Portland location posted yet. I scanned the location suggestions — if the Forestry Center is a solid offer (and assuming access would be free, not requiring paid admission to the center) that’s probably a good spot. Parking and transit are probably the best in the city (unless there’s already a concert at the zoo next door that night).
If you are still looking, you would be welcome to use our parking lot in SE Portland. I suspect it may be the best neighborhood in terms of a population sensitive to responsible housing. Our parking lot is not large, but there is street parking. You can check it out from the satellite on google maps.

The County Courthouse is a highly visible central location and there is street parking (for you) with a public parking lot adjacent for visitors. It is across the street from the Main Branch Public Library. The Santa Barbara Museum of Art is around the corner, next to the library and has a courtyard that could possibly be used. All highly visible areas for pedestrians and traffic. The Courthouse takes up the entire city block and is on Anacapa Street between Figuero and Anapamu Streets.
Looking forward to your visit!!

Hi,
I recommend Owen Memorial Rose Garden in Eugene. It is located at 300 N. Jefferson, along the Willamette River, with free parking and restrooms. This is a public park and parking the tiny house there for a couple of hours shouldn’t require permission. It’s a lovely location, easily accessible in Eugene.
I’m coming from Corvallis to see you. Looking forward to it!

I recommend Owen Rose Garden at 300 N. Jefferson in Eugene. There is good parking, it’s a public park, there are rest rooms and the location is not a thoroughfare–it’s sort of tucked away. Lovely location–good parking. It’s a bit out of the way. Permission shouldn’t be required.

p.s. The rose garden is easy to access in Eugene—by out of the way, I mean it’s not heavily trafficked there.

Come to Charlottesville, VA! (Only 3000 miles from CA!)
There are several big places to host/ display. Get in touch with the Community Planning and Design LLC group [1933 Blue Ridge Road Charlottesville, VA 22903 (434) 295-6199] or the Charlottesville Center for Peace and Justice (http://charlottesvillepeace.org/).
Either may be a good resource for information/hosting.
The Whole Foods here is pretty community minded as well and has plenty of parking.
Or you could book the John Paul Jones Arena through The University of Virginia for a big crowd, or the Downtown Mall Amphitheater through Music Today.
Best of luck on your tour!

If I ever want to retire in my lifetime I’m gonna have to make a change to a home like this. I was amazed to see that you are making a stop in my hometown of Asheville, NC in September. Do you know of others in the area that may be making a community of the tiny homes? I would be glad to hear from anyone in the Asheville area that may have information on such. ET’s Director of Marketing says, “YES! We’d love to host a Tumbleweed Open House on September 6th!” It’s a relatively small parking lot, so having an event in the late afternoon or early evening after the other businesses in the shopping center have closed would mean more room for Open House participants.
How much parking lot space would Tumbleweed require?

Would you consider holding another workshop in New York this year? Or perhaps in Vermont?
I just estimated the drive Albany to Asheville and back to cost about $781 (at typical goverment reimbursement rates) and 26 hours. With a carbon footprint that large, I’d MUCH rather give you the money and have more people share in the training.
How many people do you need to have signed up to make it worth your while? I could start recruiting people immediately!
Location-wise, I would suggest Ithaca, NY as well as Burlington or Brattleboro, VT. NYC is also fine with me.
Thanks for considering it!

Currently I am an adult full-time student and part-time employee at Fitchburg State College in north central Massachusetts. Althgough my state is on the east coast I am looking forward to your visit in the hopefully not too distant future. I am working in the Public Relations department where I don’t mind making a request for your use of our facilites. We also have access to a large Civic Center lot and building on a main thoroughfare. I feel that college students are at a perfect age to learn the value and practicality of “cottage-style” living. Many memebers of generation X and Y find trophy houses and McMansions offensive. A conversation was sparked on campus after several students viewed a segment on tv about your cottages and the general opinion was that a community of your small buildings would be appropriate for many different kinds of people - including students. They make sense in a charming NewEngland town. For example, why build impersonal cookie-cutter public housing when personalized cottages would suffice? Why build impersonal and sterile condominium complexes when many people would prefer a community of cottages? Why build ugly concrete and cinder block dorms when cottages would provide adequate shelter appropriate for studying? As a first-time home buyer I cannot find anything in my price range. I am a single male who would prefer a stand-alone home over an apartment. A small community of cottages would create affordable housing for people just out of college. It is ironic that at a time when cottages and bungalow homes are being torn down to built large ugly houses these cottages gain recognition as an answer to our current environmental and societal problems. I would like to help spread the word. Have you shown your cottages to anyone in New Orleans? They would be very appropriate to replace the old shotgun-style homes lost to the flooding during the hurricane.
Sincerely,
Charles

I would LOVE to have one of these small houses. It’s so much nicer than a trailer/camper. It’d be ideal for taking to a campground any time of year.
I live in Rochester MN and the parking lot of the Apache Mall or the adjacent hotels and convention centers would be great places to showcase your wonderful homes.
There’s a very green ethic in Minnesota like one finds throughout the northwest of the country and in Alaska. Duluth MN might also be a good place to take your homes. Lots of lakefront properties and campground around there.
The Mayo Clinic is in this town, and thus there are quite a few residents with much by way of disposable income who’d probably LOVE to buy a second home they could move around as they wished.
just thought I’d put in my 2 cents. Hopefully someday I can afford to buy or build one of these tiny castles.

At Furman University in Greenville, SC, there is a Southern Living “cottage” that was just built by developers of a large, very “upscale” community in our beautiful upstate mountains. They have been involved in some environmental shenanigans while developing their communities. This has been a very popular PR tool for them up here.
http://www.furmancliffscottage.com/
As you can see, their cottage is advertised as a showcase for sustainable living. I will let you form your own opinion.
Anyway, it would be very nice to see a similar showcase “tiny” home as an alternative. Furman has a lovely campus in Travelers Rest, and a large endowment including huge tracts of land.
It is a private liberal arts university with a fairly liberal student body and staff (for South Carolina). Next to the Cliffs cottage are three old cabins that have been converted to green living spaces. They are also refurbishing their lake and lakeside in an environmentally conscious way.

If you make it out to Michigan, I’ll bet there would be significant interest in these houses for cottage, hunting, and fishing purposes. Jay, I’ll second Caroline Connelly’s suggestion to come to the Philadelphia area. There are loads of folks around here who would seriously consider such a small home, not only for general use, but particularly for their vacation land. You might even consider arriving in conjunction with the Philadelphia Home Show, which usually falls during the third week of January and draws a very large attendance from the entire tri-state area (PA, DE, NJ). We are very serious about purchasing your weebee model to place at our farm in South Central Illinois. We want to live in the unit and be able to move it around the land so we can experience living by the river, in the timber, and in the open pasture. I want to be able to bring water to the unit but have concerns with frozen plumbing. It seems by your videos that you only used portable water for shower and sink. Do you have guidlines for hooking up water lines with these trailer homes in areas that freeze? Also can I assume the toilet is a similiar setup to camping trailers? One last question is can we request our unit to have spray foam insulation including the floor and ceiling? Or have you found there to be problems with the spray foam insulation?

Jay Shafer reply on October 14th, 2008 4:17 pm:
My primitive plumbing confuses a lot of people. It’s not what we put in other people’s houses. The toilet in the little portable ones is generally an RV type, and the same goes for water lines. Freezing is prevented with heat tape, burial and/or this… http://www.nofreezewaterhose.com/index.html.
Spray foam should pose no problem.
