Victoria Challenge

July 14, 2008 · Print This Article

Unfortunately, we’ve hit a snag in the road crossing the border to Victoria, BC. On the road, one of the taillights on the house was broken, and Jay was not able to board the ferry with a broken tail light. He rushed to the auto parts store and got a replacement, but was not able to return to the ferry on time.

Jay is scheduled to take the evening ferry and arrive at 11:00 pm. He will host an open house from 11:00 pm until midnight in the ferry parking lot.

I am so sorry to hear you had difficulty getting to Victoria - I drove around Beacon Hill Park for an hour trying to find you as I was so excited about this. I saw a few other people with hopeful/frusterated looks on their faces so they may have been in the same situation :)

I REALLY want to see your house but am concerned about making my way down there to run into a similar problem. I assume you wouldn’t have suggested 11pm if you weren’t on a tight schedule…but I am not sure what the turn out will be at 11pm.

Again, I am really sorry you weren’t allowed on the ferry just because of a broken tail light. Sounds like a ferry worker may have been taking their job a little too seriously today.

Hi Amanda, sorry you missed us. We had a small crowd at 11:00 pm, and it was worthwhile. We don’t expect any other problems on the rest of our trip.

This tiny house is completely adorable! Is it framed with lumber (2×4s) or steel?

Could you please tell me if you are planning any workshops in or near Toronto, Canada? Also, does anyone know what restrictions there might be on Tiny houses in Canada?

Jay Shafer reply on October 7th, 2008 6:06 pm:

Canada and the US look to the same International Building Code for general guidelines before tailoring restrictions at the local level. So rules up there will be similar if not the same.

I just visited Toronto for the Idea City conference a few months ago. I love that place, but I probably won’t be back for at least another year. I do intend to do a workshop in B.C. before then though.

I’d simply like to second the request for an open house/workshop in the BC Interior. (Kelowna, Penticton, Vernon) Your demographic reside here and in the West Kootenay.

Have any of your designs been adapted as houseboats/floathomes?

I’d love to visit, and I’ll look into it. Any of my houses can be put on pontoons.
