Small House Book

by Jay Shafer

What would your life be like without a mortgage? People just like you are building Tumbleweed Homes for as little as $18,000 and some sweat equity. Home ownership is within your reach. When I built my first tiny house 10 years ago, people thought I was crazy - but they stopped laughing when they saw how much money I saved. I got rid of my mortgage and took control of my life. I didn’t need to work so much and I used my newfound time to pursue my passion.

In 2008, a used house in the U.S. averaged $244,000. That is far more than the average American can afford. I’m shattering the myth that “affordable housing” needs to be cheap. My tiny homes are turning the housing industry upside down. In my book, I reveal the ugly truth about residential planning and the needless overbuilding that is, in part, to blame for today’s mortgage crisis.

Life doesn’t need to be complicated - and I’ve worked hard to remove the clutter. But, sometimes our housing laws don’t allow you to live simply. Did you know that you can’t build a “house” as tiny as the one I live in? That is, unless you know the loopholes! I’ve done the research, and I share it with you. In my book, I explain why it’s necessary to build on wheels, and take you through the process of attaching a house to a trailer with step-by-step instructions and pictures.

I’ve personally built a dozen tiny houses and lived in 3 different ones. You’d think I had a huge garage full of tools, but the reality is that I build my homes with just 14 tools. You probably have most of them in your garage right now.

My home designs range from the tiniest 1 bedroom travel trailer to a quaint 3 bedroom bungalow.

I’ve divided my houses into two sizes:
Tiny Houses: Homes from 65 square feet to 140 square feet.
Small Houses: Homes from 250 square feet to 840 square feet.

Looking for a two or three bedroom house that is affordable to build? The small houses are ideal for young families. Maybe you need a guest cottage?

Most people believe they need to own land to own a house. In the past 3 years, I’ve moved my house 4 times. I’ve lived on a private estate by a lake, in the Redwoods, in a field, and in an apple orchard. One woman has her Tumbleweed House at a national park.

All my homes are beautifully designed and proportioned, and, for the first time, I share my 7 Critical Organizing Principals and 42 Design Elements needed to create a very efficient little home.

Here’s what you don’t need to build your own home:
You don’t need a lot of expensive tools.
You don’t need a lot of money. I built my first house using my credit cards.
You don’t need to own land. I’ve found places to stay for free. Other times I’ve rented a space in a backyard.

I’ve also included basic floor plans for all the houses on the website plus more … complete with color pictures.

A few advance copies went out, and here’s the feedback:

“Hi Jay,
I just ordered the new book, it arrived within a couple of days, and it is stunning! Even if a person wasn’t interested in tiny houses, the art and layout and photographs and color is enough to intrigue anyone! My son said “the houses look so INVITING.” I thought that was a great observation.
Great work, thank you. And I will see you in May in Boulder!
Take care,
Tanja”

“The price is $36.95 and worth every penny in my humble opinion. I have my own personal copy right now in front of me and can’t put it down.”
