certified-green-badgeTumbleweed’s Quality System has been independently evaluated by TRA Certification, Inc. and found capable of producing Green Recreational Vehicles. The evaluation of Tumbleweed’s quality system, production process, material usage, recycling and environmental practices have earned this distinction.

After an evaluation of the Tumbleweed Tiny House RV manufacturing facility, its procedures and practices, the Tumbleweed RV was measured against criteria based on national consensus standards. The criteria involved Resource Efficiency, Energy Efficiency, Water Efficiency & Indoor Air Quality.

Resource Efficiency

  • The use of sustainable materials
  • Waste reduction
  • Recycling and reuse of materials
  • Wasted or inefficient use of resources equals lost profits. Lean manufacturing and environmental management systems can produce customer satisfaction and improve the bottom line.
  • Construction waste materials are recycled offsite
  • Recycling of materials
  • CNC Machines utilized to maximize material cuts
  • Jigs are used
  • Material scraps are reused
  • Reusable shipping containers used for major materials
  • Major materials are cut to size at supplier
  • Materials with over 50% recycled content are used
  • Rain drainage system installed
  • Regional materials are used for major components of the RV (500 miles)
  • RV component manufacturer facility is ISO 14001 or equivalent
  • Certified wood
  • Minimal use of wood
  • Nitrogen-filled tires
  • Cabinetry is glued & screwed vs. stapled (glue must be low VOC)
  • Tree planted for each registration

Energy Efficiency

A positive energy strategy includes efficient monitoring, design, construction and appliances. Renewable and clean sources of energy generated on or off -site, are important factors in the green process.

  • Insulation – points earned equal the average of the floor, wall and ceiling insulation R-value
  • LED lighting (>90% interior & exterior)
  • Awnings
  • Soap pressurization test
  • Energy efficient appliances
  • Energy efficient furnace or a/c
  • Energy monitoring device
  • Skylights to provide natural lighting
  • Heating system with NO ducts
  • Cooling system with NO ducts
  • Convection microwave or cooktop is standard
  • Solar panels – prewired or factory installed
  • Diesel Generators
  • Enhanced window performance
  • Programmable Thermostat
  • Rain booth test to ensure leak-free construction (points awarded only if water is recycled)

Water Efficiency

The major goal is the smart use of water. Water reduction is typically achieved through more efficient appliances and fixtures.

  • Kitchen faucet is low flow
  • Bath faucet is low flow
  • Shower head is low flow
  • Toilet is low-flow or pedal flush
  • Composting/water-less toilet
  • Instant hot water heater is standard
  • Water line test water is recycled and reused or units are air tested
  • Rain booth water is recycled and reused

Indoor Air Quality

Being green also means strong attention to indoor air quality. Important factors include:

  • Ventilation
  • Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) content in carpet
  • Hard flooring
  • Adhesives
  • Sealants
  • Cabinets and Insulation
  • MANDATORY – All wood materials are CARB 2 compliant
  • Low VOC materials are used
  • Zero or minimal carpet is installed (slide outs/cab allowed)
  • Non-emitting materials are used
  • Mechanical ventilation/exhaust devices
  • Natural ventilation
  • Ductwork is off the floor or protected/vacuumed at final
